The Poetic Expression workshop was developed to help teach young people how to deal with difficult issues and discover new methods in problem solving.  In a society that fosters violence (which leads to bullying), it is imperative that teenagers learn the important of communication as a means of conflict resolution.  Equally important is their need to learn effective alternatives to stress, anger and unhealthy decisions, made as a result of peer pressure.

The Poetic Expression workshops are designed to teach students how to accept themselves instead of seeking the acceptance of others. All of the workshops share a common foundation that emphasizes self-control, stress management, problem-solving, decision-making, civic responsibility and communication skills.  Once students have developed a general problem-solving framework, they apply their critical thinking skills to specific issues, such as substance abuse and sex, and as a result, make more positive decisions.  The emphasis is on providing life skills through hands on teaching and focusing on realistic situations.

Acquiring the life skills taught in the Poetic Expression will provide participants with a sense of independence, control over their own behavior and improved self-esteem.  With these acquired skills, students are less likely to succumb to peer pressure, teen pregnancy, substance abuse, or violent behavior.

The primary objectives of the workshops are to improve character development, academic achievement and conflict resolution skills through literature and the arts. Independence and individual responsibility are emphasized through exercises that teach teenagers self-worth and self-empowerment.  Self-esteem is also enhanced as students learn the value of  their own creative self-expression and impressions of events around them.  The workshops are writing intense and culminates with the creation of individual journals and original works of poetry, essays or story-line treatments that become entertaining on-line teen programs.

Poetic Expression Workshops

Program Purpose:   Poetic Expression is a writing program designed to inspire and motivate participants to become self-empowered through positive behavior, self-discipline and the desire to achieve both academically and creatively.  The program takes participants through a number of exercises that teaches them how to deal with difficult issues and discover new methods in problem solving.

Prior to focusing on writing poetry, the curriculum of the workshop emphasizes self-control, time/stress management, problem solving, decision-making, civic responsibility and communication skills. Once participants have developed a general problem-solving framework, they will apply their critical thinking skills to specific issues in their lives that might serve as current barriers to success.  The emphasis is on providing life skills through hands on teaching and focusing on individual realistic situations.   Once the workshop exercises have been completed, the participants take their new introspect and create original works of poetry and short stories.  After the writing phase of the workshop, students are then taught how to perform or recite their original work so that they may showcase their finished product to family and friends at the end of the workshop session.

Acquiring the life skills taught in Poetic Expression will provide students with a sense of independence, control over their own behavior and improve self-esteem. With these acquired skills, students are less likely to succumb to peer pressure, substance abuse or violent behavior.

Poetic Expression’s Mission

The mission of the Poetic Expression workshops are three fold:  (i) to enhance each students self-esteem and instill personal confidence, (ii) to teach students how to identify and express their anger, aggression, fears, and pain in a written format, and (iii) to explore the origin of ideas and behaviors through hands-on activities, and teach participants to appreciate and respect their individuality, as well as the individuality of others.
